I completely change my mind.

Wedding planning is no longer for the birds. In fact, it's a ton of fun. While I'm ready to be married and want the day to come quickly, I think I'll be sad in a way when it's over.

We have save the dates addressed and ready to go - they'll be mailed after the holiday.

The best part was finding my dress. I was able to go with my mom, which I didn't initially think would be possible. I had fallen in love with this one gown. It was flowy with lace and tulle. But, I called the places who carried the designer and nobody had it. I ended up going to this great place in Mount Pleasant, SC where they had the style I thought I wanted in a different fabric.

I was totally wrong. I fell in love with something completely different. A much fuller skirt with a sexy sweetheart neck. The train was longer than I thought I would want. I was just in love.

My mom was completely quiet. She wouldn't tell me what she thought until after I said, "I think it's it." And then she tells me she knew it all along. Of course!

So now that I have the dress - in 12 to 16 weeks - I am no longer begging my fiance to just elope. Suddenly, everything feels real.

wedding planning...

... is for the birds.

Yes, I said wedding planning is for the birds. Our date is two years away and until yesterday was stressing me out beyond words.
With everyone we and our parents want to attend it seemed like we were never going to find a nice venue in this crazy town. Everything was too touristy, too small, too expensive, too trashy, etc.
Finally though, I think I found the perfect venue and there's a bit of calm again.
If we can book this place at the lunch hour we want, we can afford it and it will be beautiful, quaint and just like us.
So, I take it back. Wedding planning is suddenly fun again. Pray we get the venue!

Sippin' on Summer

My parents finally broke away from Virginia and took time to visit over the holiday weekend. We celebrated anniversaries and birthdays - their anniversary happens to be the exact date of Rob's birthday.
It was a weekend packed of both relaxation and fun. We spent the afternoon and evening in Charleston where we stopped by Jack's Cosmic Dogs, a famous hot dog joint. Then we just walked the town visiting the Old Slave Market and just about every art gallery. I wish I were more gifted with a paint brush.
Stopped by baked, an supremely awesome coffee and bakery shop.
Sunday we went to the beach where I did some work on the crowded sand in Surfside. Then Habibi's for Lebanese food before the baseball game. Not exactly American, to eat Lebanese food on the Fourth of July, but it was delicious. Besides, we capped the night off with baseball and there's nothing quite as patriotic as a baseball game. Even with the home team loses, which they did 10-4.
The rents were set to leave late in the afternoon on Monday, but we headed to a local winery even though we were worried for time. La Belle Amie sits about half an hour north of our home and after one visit it is already one of my favorite places around here.
The chemist who makes the wine did the wine tasting for us, teaching us all about the grapes and the process and guided us through each sample. Tasted some of the best wines I've ever had and Rob and I are both excited for the holidays where we can serve mulled wine.
Now, we have seven bottles to drink by the end of summer. Though, with the weather here, we've really got until the end of September.

Watch out...he's on the rise.

The World Cup is in full swing. The US has made history by not only breaking through the group round, but also by actually winning their group - for the first time in 90 years - with a 90+ minute goal against Algeria.
It seems for once, everyone in the country is on the edge of his or her seat to watch soccer. The sport has sat in the shadows for so long and is finally breaking ranks and winning over the heart of Americans.
Naturally then, I want to talk about baseball.
And don’t get me wrong, I have approximately 12 hours of soccer on DVR and I, too, am loving the World Cup.
But, I finally saw Julio Teheran pitch the other day. I’ve read about him, I’ve heard about him, and I’ve listened to live radio broadcasts while he stood dominating the mound.
The talk has been good. At the beginning of the season, when all eyes – including mine – were on Jason Heyward, Teheran sat in the wings. Heyward was named the No. 1 prospect in all of the minor leagues. Teheran took No. 34 on the same list.
He’s 19 and from Columbia and his English isn’t great, but that’s OK because his arm does the talking.
In 39 innings Teheran has struck out 49 batters. In one game alone, he struck out 14 and in two different outings he struck out 12. With numbers like these, you’d think he was pitching to teams without heavy bats, but not even close.
He struck out 12 batters each in games against the first half Carolina League Southern-Division Champions from Winston-Salem and the Potomac Nationals who have 11 different players hitting at or above .248. As a team, the Winston-Salem Dash led the entire league hitting .296.
The 14-strikeout game was against the Frederick Keys, who have the third highest team batting average in all of the Carolina League at .261. They also won the first half in the Northern-Division.
And if you’re wondering about power, all three teams sent hitters to participate in the home run derby at the California-Carolina League All-Star game. It was a Dash player who took the derby crown.
So, clearly the players can it. But, Teheran who easily throws fastballs in the mid-90s and topping out at a blazing 97-mph. Add to that his mid-80s changeup and the kid seems untouchable.
He’s gone 3-1 with Myrtle Beach and holds a 1.38 ERA.
At the beginning of the season, when he was named the No. 34 prospect the major league analysts predicted he would debut in the Majors in 2013. But if he holds onto this quick progress he’ll take the mound in Atlanta sooner than that.
One things for sure, he’ll be shipping out of Myrtle Beach as quickly as he closes an inning.
Already missed him at the beach? Catch him on TV. He was selected as one of two players from the Braves organization to play in the 2010 Futures game July 11 on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD starting at 6 p.m.

almost there

I guess in a way I've always felt the need to prove myself. One of four children with brothers and a sister all immensely talented in such different ways. I always had my academics. It seemed that was the only place I could surpass them. So it was natural that even as the third born I was the first to earn a four year degree.
But now, instead of using the degree I worked so hard to earn, my attention is focused on making in the journalism world. I've been a freelancer for two years and it has been filled with the most frustrating and rewarding experiences of my life. But its also exhausting to be simply a freelancer, and just as exhausting to continually explain how I leaped from playing with rocks and studying the ocean to sports journalism.
So finally, the SC Press Award winners were released. I won. I won an award. An journalism award but even more a sports journalism award. I took second place in the sports feature story category for my profile on Brian McCann after his rehab stint with the Pelicans.
My first thought was to call my parents and to tell them I'm going somewhere and they didn't waste their money on my degree.
But now I realize I'm proving my worth to just myself. I do belong in this world and in this career. I will make it and I will be successful.

Fall is over

When I graduated college I wondered how I would measure time without anymore semesters. Someone told me months. Another said days or years.
They were wrong.
My life is now measured in seasons. Sports seasons that is.
Fall sports have come to a close, finally. Swimming ended a month ago and cross country finished the season last weekend.
October also signified the end of the baseball season, so sad for me and those of Red Sox nation to watch our rivals take the World Series. There's always next season.

My life right now is in transition just like the leaves on the tree. From fall with bright orange and yellow and red leaves and a thousand sporting events to cover and keep me busy. Now it's winter with only pine needles remaining on the trees and only basketball to occupy my time until the busy spring.

MLB round two

Tim Hudson is rehabbing with the Pelicans this Sunday.

...Commence miniature panic attack...

I'm glad I have one major league player interview under my belt already, but I'm getting nervous. The last interview with Brian McCann was during batting practice, so it was just him and I, it was private. This time, they've requested all media interviews be conducted following his start in the clubhouse, which means the three major TV stations plus the Sun News will all be there trying to get the interview at the same time.
I'll have to be more aggressive than I am accustomed to, and I want a more in-depth profile than a
2 minute spot on how he is feeling and how glad he is to be back from the Tommy John surgery he had about a year ago.

EEP.
